Preening

As I was exploring Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, near the Kennedy Space Center, I happened upon this Great Egret. He spent over 30 minutes preening his feathers. Proper feather maintenance is critical to survival. Near the turn of the century, these plumes were prized by the fashion industry and these bird populations nearly went extinct. These days the only ones wearing these feathers are the birds!
