As I was working on this painting, I saw a documentary about the decimation of herds which traveled along their age old
paths which happened to pass out of a protected national park and into another country where soldiers killed for sport or
for the valuable ivory. These matriarchal societies were losing the older females who maintained the tribal memories - of
water holes and feeding grounds used only in drought conditions over many generations. Without the older females, the
next generations have lost this accumulated memory. The look in her eye is one of sadness for lost "aunts" and lost
memories.
